Sanoor Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple

L
ord Mahaligeshwara at Sanoor is worshipped as the village deity.   The temple is situated two kilometers away from National Highway 169 via Sanoor and Karkala-Padubidri State Highway via Kuntalpady and Doopadakatte as well. River Shambhavi flows near the temple.

Also known as “Maadri devasthana” among some, the deity is believed to be installed around 850 years ago.   The shiva linga here, unlike in other places, has a yellowish tinge.

The dilapidated shrine was renovated and ashtabandha brahmakalashotsava was held in the year 1998. The temple has regained its glory since then.

Dharmashaasta, equivalant to Lord Ayyappa is also worshipped on the premises.

Annual festival

Villagers and the devotees from other places converge for the four-day annual festival.  The event starts with Dhwajarohana on the 31st of January every year and the car festival is held on the third day. The chariot was drawn around the temple on the outer yard. Religious fervor lingers on the entire village on those days

The temple offers lunch to the devotees on every Monday. Shivaratri is another special occasion celebrated at the temple. Deepotsava is held on Karthika bahula Dwadashi.

The Lord is believed to fulfill the earnest prayers of the devotees.
